Elysium: The Great Resting Place
Elysium (sometimes called the Elysian Fields) was the dwelling place of the exceptional. This island was where heroes (and other extraordinary mortals) were sent after death. Elysium was a paradise, where men and women enjoyed a comfortable afterlife. Games were held, music was played, and good times were had by all. The fields were always green and the sun always shone.#5092•
Asphodel Fields: Home for Commoners
Most shades resided in the Asphodel Fields. This region of the Underworld was a middle ground, neither good nor bad. The final dwelling place for most commoners, the Asphodel Fields held more souls than Elysium and Tartarus combined.
Here, the shades normally mimicked the activities of their former lives. Memories did not exist here, so shades usually acted like machines with no individuality. The Asphodel Fields were monotonous and offered little variety or socialization. Even so, this region of the Underworld was a much better place to be than Tartarus.#5095•
Tartarus was located beneath the Underworld. It was so far below ground, in fact, that the distance between Tartarus and the surface was said to be the same as the distance between Earth and the heavens. A dark and dismal place, Tartarus was feared by all, even the gods and goddesses. It was here that the very wicked were sent to suffer eternal punishment.#5099•
