Chapter 1

  • At this core level, stories and games are in blissful agreement. The driving force behind both experiences is the core conflict of a character wanting something, but needing to overcome challenges in order to get it.
  • In each case, the goals of the main character and the goals of other characters are at odds with each other; thus the want/but pattern (the conflict) we see in everything we call a story, and in everything we call a game.

Chapter 2

  • A car's main components are engineered to convert fuel into forward, controllable motion. Everything is built around this core function.
